Feelin The Wind... Run Escape..........
When I passed my Motorcycle Safety Foundation course, my rider coaches said I was the very first deaf person to pass the
course (thanks to my interpreter and American Sign Language). Getting my license was really a dream come true. And if I
can be successful, other deaf or handicapped people can do it, too!
Although I took and passed the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course when I was 30, I didn’t know about actually buying a
bike. At first, I simply couldn't afford one. Then my family didn’t want me to get one. Then I had kids. Etc. But even though I
was starting to really hit my "me" stride, I knew something important was missing. My secret longing for a bike got restirred
every time I saw bikers ride by and I felt the rumbling from their Harleys.
So finally, at age 31, I went out and bought a 1000cc, 1991 Old School Chopper. I love that bike and the feeling of
accomplishment, freedom, and power it gives me. I am one with my machine. I even like washing and waxing it ... and I can
pick it up, too! That motorcycle was the last item on my "life list to-do's," and I have no regrets at all.
Riding is something I do for me, but I also feel lucky to have realized a 20-year old dream, and to have the support of my
family - and the local Harley guys, who always make time to answer my questions and encourage me. That's the great thing
about being a member of the Harley family - it brings together people from all walks of life.
